Frequently asked questions
The New York driving test is divided into a written test and a road test.
Step 1: Bring all the materials, choose the nearest DMV (New York State Motor Vehicle Administration) to register, and pass the written test. The written test question bank only has over 120 questions. You can practice online by searching for "New York State Driver's License Written Test Simulation Question" online. You can go to the DMV official website to read the "New York Driver's License Handbook" for details. (Knock on the blackboard!) There is no need to make an appointment for the written exam. Fill out the form and select the number, and take the exam as you come. You can choose to use Chinese for the exam. The written test is to do Multiple choice on the computer. There is no limit on the number of times, but there is only one chance a day. Each time, 20 questions are completed, and no more than 6 questions are wrong.
Step 2: After passing the written test, submit all the materials on-site and pay a fee (approximately $70) to obtain a paper learner's permit. The materials required on site include:
• US citizen passport 4 points
Citizen paper 3 points
Green card 3 points
C8, C9, A5 3 points
Social Security Card 2 points
Foreign passport 3 points (F1 visa requires I-20, I-94)
American University Transcript 2 points
Credit card 1 point
• American Marriage certificate 1 point
• Different residency certificates, such as copies of rental contracts, phone bills, utility bills, bank bills, etc. 1 point
Each material has a corresponding score, and any material can be collected for 6 points.
International students can also bring proof such as school transcripts, no SSN certificate, medical insurance card, etc. The learner's permit (equivalent to a pass in the road test) will be sent to your address within about 14 days.

Yes. Go to the Social Security Bureau to apply and receive a paper proof of ineligibility letter on the spot, which is valid for 30 days. You must apply for a learner's permit within the validity period. After passing the road test, DMV will still review this certificate. If it expires, they will need to go back to the Social Security Bureau to collect it.
No way. A driver's license is associated with a work card. Your work card has expired and you cannot obtain your driver's license. And once the work card expires, the driver's license will also become invalid. In this situation, people with expired work cards should never drive again. (Starting from December 2019, the New York State Greenlight NY has officially come into effect, allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for a New York State driver's license.)
The road test takes about ten minutes. The road test is mainly divided into the starting preparation stage, all way stop signs, stop signs, three point or U-turn, turning left, turning right, and parallel parking. (There are many details that need to be deducted, which will be covered in the teaching process.)
It is recommended that experienced professionals not overlook the differences in traffic regulations between China and the United States. Even if you are an experienced driver with a good driving record, please temporarily let go of your driving habits during the road test and obediently do the necessary actions (such as turning your head before changing lanes, firmly braking for 3 seconds before stopping, etc.).
You can apply for a New York driver's license at the age of 16. If under the age of 18, parents/guardians can submit a parent/guardian identity and/or residence statement (Form MV-45). The required information can be found at the top of the Stars Driving School website by clicking on "Complete Information". Applicants under the age of 21 must wait at least 6 months after receiving the Junior Leaner Permit before they can apply for the road test.
Can I use my own car for the exam? Yes. The vehicles used for driving school training and exams are not exclusive. Students can use their own private cars for learning or use the driving school's coach car for practice. But the road test must be accompanied by a legitimate and formal driver's license holder before entering the test venue. Please note that the vehicle's annual inspection label has not expired, and the accompanying person must bring a valid and valid driver's license.
